Ben Goertzel has been working toward artificial general intelligence since before most of the field took the goal seriously. He popularized the term "AGI" itself, distinguishing the pursuit of general intelligence from narrow AI. His OpenCog framework represents one of the few serious attempts to build AGI through cognitive architecture rather than scaling neural networks. Goertzel founded SingularityNET to decentralize AI development, arguing that concentrating AGI in the hands of a few corporations is an existential risk in itself. He remains one of the most intellectually ambitious figures in AI, willing to pursue architectures and approaches that the mainstream considers fringe. If AGI arrives through a path other than scaled transformers, Goertzel's ideas may prove prescient.
