The Fermi Paradox
The universe is vast and old. Given billions of years and trillions of stars, it seems life should have arisen many times and spread throughout the galaxy. Yet we see no evidence of alien civilizations—no signals, no probes, no megastructures, nothing.

Abiogenesis: The origin of life from non-living matter. If this is astronomically unlikely, we may be among the first or only life in the observable universe.
Complex cells: The evolution of eukaryotic cells (with nuclei) from simpler prokaryotes happened only once on Earth. Perhaps this transition is vanishingly rare.
Intelligence: Maybe intelligent life rarely evolves even when life exists, due to the specific conditions required.
If any of these is the filter, we may be alone—but we're past the danger.
Filter Ahead
The terrifying possibility is that the filter lies ahead of us. If civilizations regularly arise but regularly destroy themselves before expanding into the cosmos, then we face the same fate.
Candidates for future filters include:
Nuclear war: Technology enables self-destruction before achieving interstellar capability.
Engineered pandemics: Biotechnology makes it possible to create civilization-ending diseases.
Artificial intelligence: Perhaps creating superintelligent AI is easy, but aligning it with creators' interests is nearly impossible—so civilizations are destroyed by their own creations.
Resource depletion: Perhaps expanding civilizations inevitably exhaust their resources before achieving sustainability.
Implications for the Singularity
The Great Filter has particular relevance for AI development. If unaligned superintelligent AI is a common failure mode—if creating powerful AI is easy but making it safe is hard—this could explain the cosmic silence.
This possibility should increase our concern about AI alignment. We may be approaching the most dangerous filter in our species' history.
