Fei-Fei Li understood something most AI researchers missed in the 2000s: the bottleneck for machine learning wasn't algorithms but data. She created ImageNet, a dataset of 14 million labeled images that became the benchmark for computer vision. The 2012 ImageNet competition, won by a deep neural network, triggered the deep learning revolution that led directly to today's AI capabilities. Without ImageNet, the current AI boom might have been delayed by years. Li went on to serve as VP at Google Cloud and co-direct the Stanford Human-Centered AI Institute. In 2024 she founded World Labs, a spatial intelligence company building AI that understands the 3D world, and now serves as its CEO. Her work demonstrates that infrastructure contributions can be as transformative as algorithmic breakthroughs.
